It is very difficult to get to your destination if you are flying blind. You need some kind of clue. Either a “visual” or if not, fly by instruments.

In business, most of the time will be latter, as none of us was born with special Gross Margin, or Lead Conversion senses. What instruments are necessary, or what do we measure, is part of a different, much longer conversation that stems from the old adage of “what gets measured gets improved” (which is not completely true nor attributable to management guru Peter Drucker). Developing the right KPIs (or Key Performance Indicators) for your business should be a thoughtful process that identifies, not just the ultimate goals, but also any leading indicators that would allow you to correct course as early as possible.

Instead, what I want to highlight here in this article is the tremendous power of sharing these KPIs organization wide, in real time.

Wire up the Dashboard

A Dashboard provides real-time information needed to run your business. High growth, exceptional organizations (Exponential Organizations or ExOs) use dashboards with traditional, but also non-traditional metrics, such as indicators focused on tracking the process towards the purpose, and even tracking innovation, or the number of “experiments” run. Most of the time, it’s not about how the data is shown, but about what’s the type of data shown, how much does it reflect the current situation (is not delayed), and how widely is it shared.

Sharing the same data means that everybody shares the same view of reality, and given the opportunity and the adequate empowerment, anybody, and everybody can react to steer the organization towards its purpose, which has also been shared, understood, and internalized through the Massive Transformative Purpose (for more on that, check out: ExO Attribute 0: MTP - The Daily PPILL #400).

ExO Attributes are the 11 things that the best performing companies in the world do particularly well, and that allow them to deliver in excess of 10x better results. If you haven't done it yet, a good place to start is by reading Exponential Organizations 2.0. Get a free copy of it HERE.

I repeat that. I HAVE A FREE COPY OF THE BOOK FOR YOU HERE.
